Son of Christopher and Nannie Hughes, of Graiguenamanah, Co. Kilkenny. Educated at Clongowes Wood College, Ireland. Gazetted to the 3rd Bn. Connaught Rangers in 1901. Served in the South African Campaign with 3rd Bn. Highland Light Inf. (1902).
