Joseph Franklin (Apprentice machine-minder) enlisted in September 1914 in the 1/1st Bn. Cambridgeshire Regt. (T.F.), and in February 1915 he went with his unit to France. He was slightly wounded in June 1916, and in the same month he was awarded the Military Medal. He was promoted Sergeant in January 1917. In September 1917 he returned to England as a candidate for a commission, and he went back to France in the following November as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 4th Bn. Middlesex Regt. After the armistice he was transferred to the 7th Bn. Middlesex Regt. in the Army of Occupation. He was promoted Lieutenant in March 1919.
