Wilfred Phypers (Counting-house) enlisted in September 1914 in the Cambridgeshire Regt. (T.F.). He was promoted Lance-Corporal in January 1915, Corporal in May 1915, and Sergeant in the following September. In April 1916 he was attached to the 1st Army Grenade School as Sergt.-lnstructor, and in the following August he became Sergt.-lnstructor and Quartermaster-Sergeant at the Northern Army Bombing School. He was appointed Company Quartermaster-Sergeant in October 1916. In the following year he became a candidate for a commission, and was gazetted 2nd Lieutenant in the Lincolnshire Regt. in May. He went to France in July 1917 and served there until April 1918, when he was wounded. He was in hospital in England until February 1919, being promoted Lieutenant in the previous November, and on recovery he served for 3 months in Ireland before he was eventually demobilised in April 1919.
