CAPTAIN EDWARD BERRY CARPENTER, ROYAL MARINE LIGHT INFANTRY
(H, 1899-1905) was born 11 April 25th, 1886. He was the son of Rev. E. S. Carpenter, of Highcliffe Vicarage, Hants, and came to Winchester from Sandroyd School. He was three years Head of his House, a Commoner Prefect and in Sixth Book: he played for two years in Commoner VI and one year in Lords, and edited the Wykehamist. In 1905 he went up to University College, Oxford, and in 1908 was elected President of Junior Common Room : he graduated with Honours in the Final Classical School in 1909 and the same year passed into the Home Civil Service. He acted for three years as Secretary to the Chairman of Customs and Excise and gave his leisure to the study of the law, being called to the Bar by the Inner Temple.
As soon as the war broke out he tried to obtain a commission : but a month passed before he could persuade the Department to release him. He was then gazetted to the Plymouth Battalion of the Royal Marine Light Infantry, which formed part of the Royal Naval Division, and sailed for the Dardanelles in February 1915, taking part in the landing at Gallipoli on April 25th. He was wounded on May 10th, but in spite of that went out the same day with a brother officer and rescued one of his men under heavy fire. He returned to Gallipoli on July 11th and on August 17th fell mortally wounded. He died next day and was buried at sea, off Cape Helles. He was an enthusiast for the winter sports in Switzerland and an excellent skater.
