CAPTAIN GORDON HOLLAND MERRIMAN (H, 1898-1902) was born on December 10th, 1884—son of F. Merriman Esq., J.P., of Knutsf ord, and one of three Wykehamist brothers. He entered the School from Horris Hill and became Head of his House, a Commoner Prefect and a member of Sixth Book : he was also for two years President of Boat Club and played in Commoner XV. He passed through Woolwich, where he won the Silver Bugle and represented the Royal Military Academy against Sandhurst in the sports and at hockey ; he obtained his commission in 1904 in the R.F.A. and served subsequently in India and South Africa. In 1912 he was transferred to the R.H.A. and on the outbreak of war proceeded to France with J Battery. He was promoted Captain in October 1914 and in the early months of 1915 was given command of a R.F.A. ammunition column, and later of a field battery. On May 12th, 1915, during the Second Battle of Ypres, one of his limbers was ignited by enemy shell-fire. Captain Merriman immediately ordered everyone under cover and ran up to extinguish the fire. He was struck by a shell while so engaged and instantaneously killed.
