CAPTAIN GEOFFREY PERCY ROBERT TOYNBEE
RIFLE BRIGADE



CAPTAIN GEOFFREY PERCY ROBERT TOYNBEE (C, 1898-1903) was born on May 18th, 1885—the son of P. R. T. Toynbee Esq. (CULL., 1865-1870). He came to Winchester from Mr. G. T. Worsley's school at Hillingdon, became a House Prefect and played in O.T.H. VI in 1902 and in Lords in 1903: he afterwards represented Hampshire and the Army at cricket, and captained the XI at Sandhurst. He passed through the Royal Military College with distinction, and was gazetted in 1905 to the 3rd Battalion Rifle Brigade. In 1914, while serving in India, he was promoted to the command of a company in the 1st Battalion and when war broke out travelled to France at his own expense to join them. He was killed at dawn on the 15th of November, 1914, near Ploegsteert Wood.
