Gates J E Pte G/36782 11th Royal Sussex Regiment James Edward Gates (Compositor) enlisted in June 1916 in the 3rd Bn. Suffolk Regt. In January 1917 he joined the 1st Bn. Suffolk Regt. on the Salonika front, where he remained until, in March 1918, he was invalided home with malaria. In July 1918 he was transferred to the 21st Bn. Middlesex Regt., and in the following month he was once more transferred, to the 11th Bn. Royal Sussex Regt., with whom he served in Russia from September 1918 to August 1919.
