Newman B Sergt 325142 1st Cambridgeshire Regiment
Bertram Newman (Monotype operator) was mobilised on August 4th, 1914, with the 1st Bn. Cambridgeshire Regt., in which he had served for years before the war. He was promoted Corporal in the following November. In February 1915 he proceeded to France, but was invalided home a few months later suffering from shell-shock. On his recovery he was transferred to the Suffolk Regt., and, being placed in a low medical category, he was retained as a Drill Instructor at home. He was promoted Sergeant in November 1916 and Company Sergeant-Major in March 1917.
