Walter James Pearson (Town Department, Fetter Lane) enlisted in May 1915 in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve; he qualified as Able Seaman in June 1915 and as Leading Seaman in the following July. In August 1915 he was drafted to H.M.S. Zealandia, in the Grand Fleet, which after some months of patrol work in the North Sea proceeded to the Dardanelles and took part in the evacuation. He was afterwards transferred to H.M.S. Endeavour, which was engaged mainly in combating the U-boat activities in the Mediterranean during the latter part of the war, and was the second boat to pass through the Dardanelles on November 10th, 1918. He was demobilised in May 1919.
