Cornelius Clement Ruark (Warehouse, Fetter Lane) enlisted in March 1915 in the Royal Flying Corps, and was duly transferred to the Royal Air Force on its formation. In January 1916 he went to France, where he served first with No. 20 Squadron and afterwards with No. 47 Kite Balloon Section, until he returned for demobilisation in March 1919. Being graded 1st Class Air Mechanic in July 1915, he was promoted Corporal in July 1916, Sergeant in February 1918, and Acting Flight Sergeant in the following December. He was slightly gassed at St Julien (in the Ypres salient) in March 1918.
