Alan Edward Titchmarsh (Secretary's Department) enlisted in March 1915 in the 203rd Field Coy., Royal Engineers. He was promoted Lance-Corporal in January 1916, and in the same month he went with his unit to France. In March 1917 he returned to England as a candidate for a commission, and after a short spell at the R.E. Depot, Chatham, he was posted to an Officer Cadet Bn. He was gazetted 2nd Lieutenant in the 5th Bn. Sherwood Foresters (Notts. and Derby Regt.) in September 1917, and 3 months later he was transferred to the Royal Flying Corps, which became merged in the Royal Air Force in the following April. He obtained his "wings" as a Flying Officer (Pilot), and was promoted Lieutenant, in August 1918.
