ARNOLD, A. V. L/Cpl., 20th London Regiment, and Fusiliers. Mobilised in 1914, he proceeded overseas in the following year, and fought in the Battles of La Bassée, Ypres, and Festubert. He was wounded and gassed in action in the Somme sector, and after his recovery continued his service until the conclusion of hostilities. He holds the 1914 Star, and the General Service and Victory Medals, and was demobilised in 1919. 110, Colomb Street, Greenwich, S.E.10. ARNOLD, A. V., Gunner, R.G.A. He joined in May 1916, and later in the same year proceeded to the Western Front. Whilst in this theatre of war he took part in several engagements, including the Battles of the Somme (I), Vimy Ridge, Arras, Ypres, Passchendaele, Cambrai, Lens and the Somme (II), and in the Retreat and Advance of 1918. After hostilities ceased, he went to Germany with the Army of Occupation and served there until his demobilisation in October 1919, and holds the General Service and Victory Medals. 44, Briant St., New Cross, S.E.14. ARNOLD, B. Rifleman, King's Royal Rifle Corps. He joined in March 1917, and underwent a period of training prior to his being drafted overseas. After the Armistice he proceeded to Germany with the Army of Occupation and served there until his demobilisation in November 1920, during which time he did consistently good work with his unit. 54, Ainsty Street, Rotherhithe, S.E.16. ARNOLD, C. E., Private, 2/4th Queen's Own (Royal West Kent Regiment). He volunteered in May 1915, and underwent a period of training prior to being drafted to Egypt in July of the following year. Whilst in this seat of operations he saw much severe fighting on the Suez Canal and later proceeded into Palestine, where he was again in action on the River Jordan and at the capture of Jerusalem and Damascus. He returned home and was demobilised in May 1919, holding the General Service and Victory Medals. 16, Alder St., Sumner Rd., Peckham, S.E.15. ARNOLD, D. H. C., Corporal, R.E. He volunteered in November 1914, and in the following year was drafted to Gallipoli, where he was present at the Landing at Suvla Bay and other important operations. He contracted malaria while in the East, and was invalided home. After his recovery he was engaged on special duty in England with the searchlight section. He was demobilised in 1919, and holds the 1914-15 Star, and the General Service and Victory Medals. 56, Lassell Street, Greenwich, S.E.10. ARNOLD, F., Private, R.A.S.C (M.T.) Shortly after volunteering in April 1915, he was drafted to the Western Front, where he was engaged on important duties in various sectors. Stationed also at St. Omer and many other places, he rendered valuable services with his Company until his return home for demobilisation in August 1919. He holds the 1914-15 Star, and the General Service and Victory Medals. 16, Alder Street, Peckham, S.E.15. ARNOLD, G., Driver, R.F.A. Volunteering in November 1914, be was sent to France in September of the following year. He was in action at Loos, Albert, Vermelles, Vimy Ridge, the Somme, Arras, Bullecourt, Ypres and Passchendaele, where he was wounded. He was invalided home, and after a long period in hospital, was discharged owing to his injuries in February 1919. He holds the 1914-15 Star, and the General Service and Victory Medals. 87, Langley Road, Catford, S.E.6. ARNOLD, G., Driver, R.A.S.C. (H.T.) He volunteered in September 1914, and was shortly afterwards drafted overseas. During his service on the Western Front he was engaged on very important duties conveying supplies and ammunition to the forward areas and did consistently good work. He was demobilised in 1919. and holds the 1914 Star, and the General Service and Victory Medals. 29, King Arthur Street, Peckham, S.E.15. ARNOLD, G., Rifleman, King's Royal Rifle Corps. He joined in May 1918, and after a short period of training was drafted to France, where he took part in much severe fighting near Arras. He died gloriously on the Field of Battle in October 1918, and was entitled to the General Service and Victory Medals. He volunteered in January 1915, and after a period of training at Chatham, was commissioned to H.M.S. "Phaeton." He first saw service in the Dardanelles and later proceeded to the North Sea, where he took part in the Battle of Jutland. He also played a prominent part in operations in the Adriatic, and Aegean Seas, and did continuously good work throughout the war, and was demobilised in May 1919, holding the 1914-15 Star, and the General Service and Victory Medals. 19, Achilles Street, New Cross, SE14 ARNOLD, G. W., Gunner, R.F.A. Volunteering in August 1914, he was drafted overseas and took part in the Battles of Neuve Chapelle, Festubert, Loos, Albert, Vimy Ridge, Arras, Ypres (III), and on the Somme (II), where he was badly gassed and buried by an explosion in 1917. As a result, he was invalided to the Base before being sent home. He was discharged in July 1918 as medically unfit for further service, and holds the 1914-15 Star, and the General Service and Victory Medals. He also holds the King's Certificate. 58, Astbury Road, Peckham, S.E.15. ARNOLD, W. A., L/Corporal, 2/8th City of London (Post Office Rifles). He volunteered in August 1914, and in the following March was drafted to the Western Front. There he took part in several engagements, including the Battles of Neuve Chapelle, St. Eloi, Ypres, Festubert, Loos, Vermelles and Vimy Ridge. He was unfortunately killed in action on the Somme in October 1916, and was entitled to the 1914-15 Star, and the General Service and Victory Medals. "He joined the great white company of valiant souls." 23, Upcot Street, Peckham, S.E.15. ARNOLD, W. G., Gunner, R.F.A. He joined in May 1917, and underwent a period of training prior to his being drafted overseas. Whilst in Salonika he took part in much fighting on the Doiran front, but contracted malaria and was invalided to hospital. He was still serving in 1920 and holds the General Service and Victory Medals. 44, Briant Street, New Cross, S.E.14. ARNOLD, W. J., Private, 2/2nd London Regiment (Royal Fusiliers). He joined in May 1918, and after a short period of training was drafted to the Western Front. In this theatre of war he took part in several engagements, and was wounded in action and sent to hospital. He returned home in November 1919, and was then demobilised, holding the General Service and Victory Medals. 50, Credon Road, Rotherhithe, S.E.16. ARNUP, V. F., Private, 2/22nd London Regiment. He joined in June 1916, and after a period of training was drafted later in the same year to the Western Front. There he took part in many important engagements in various sectors, was twice wounded in action, at Ypres and on the Somme, and was taken prisoner during the Retreat of March 1918. He unhappily died whilst still in captivity, on December 28th, 1918. He was entitled to the General Service and Victory Medals. "His memory is cherished with pride." 50, Blenheim Grove, Peckham, S.E.15. ARTER, C., Telegraphist, R.N. He was serving in H.M.S. "Essex" on the declaration of war, and until 1916 was engaged on patrol and convoy duties off the West Indies and in South American waters. He was then transferred to H.M.T.B.D. "Orcadia," which was employed in escorting troopships to France. After the Armistice he did duty in the Black Sea and off the Crimean Coast in H.M.S. "Tumult " and returned to England in August 1920. He was then transferred to H.M.S. "Inconstant," and was still serving later in that year with the Atlantic Fleet. He holds the 1914-15 Star, and the General Service and Victory Medals. 25, Braxfield Road., Brockley, S.E.4. ARTHUR, W. G., Driver, R.A.S.C. (M.T.) Volunteering in 1915, he proceeded to the Western Front later in that year and there took an active part in the Battles of Loos and the Somme. He was transferred in 1916 to Salonika, where he was engaged in conveying food and ammunition to the forward areas on the Doiran and Vardar fronts until the cessation of hostilities. He was demobilised on his return home in 1919 and holds the 1914-15 Star, and the General Service and Victory Medals. 23, Lanvanor Road, Peckham, S.E.15. ASBURY, A., A.B., Royal Navy. He volunteered in April 1915, and later in the same year sailed to the North Sea in H.M.S. "Duke of Edinburgh." Whilst in this ship he was engaged on important patrol duties and took part in the Battle of Jutland on May 31st, 1916, when he was severely wounded. He was sent to hospital at Scapa Flow and later transferred to Chatham Hospital, where he died of his injuries on August 17th, 1917.
