From 1915 until 1917, he was engaged on important work in connection with the construction of aerodromes, and later served at Messrs. Vickery's, Old Kent Road, making hand grenades and fuses. Throughout his period of service he carried out his duties in a most efficient manner. 5, Faulkner Street, New Cross, S.E.14. BAKER, J., Private, R.A.S.C. (M.T.) He joined in April 1916, and later in the same month proceeded to Mesopotamia, and served with the mechanical transport section on repair duties. Whilst in the East he suffered from malaria, but remained overseas until July 1919,when he returned home and was demobilised. He holds the General Service and Victory Medals. 5, Faulkner Street, New Cross, S.E.14. BAKER, J. A., Private, Middlesex Regiment. Joining in 1916, he proceeded in the same year to France, and whilst there saw much heavy fighting, at Arras, Ypres, Messines, and Carnbrai. Later suffering from shell-shock he was invalided to the Base, and afterwards to England. Subsequently after receiving hospital treatment he was discharged as medically unfit in October 1918. He holds the General Service and Victory Medals. 1, Woodland Street, Greenwich, S.E.10. BAKER, J. G., A.B., Royal Navy. He joined in February 1918, and served in H.M.S. "Pembroke" for a time. Afterwards he proceeded to the North Sea, where he was engaged on important mine-laying duties. He was demobilised in February 1919, and holds the General Service and Victory Medals. 38, Pelton Road, Greenwich, S.E.10. BAKER, J. R. C., Private, R.A.M.C. After volunteering in October 1914, he was engaged on important hospital duties at St. Albans, Colchester, Margate, and Blackpool, and did very valuable work until 1917, when he was drafted to France. There he served in many of the battles in the Retreat and Advance of 1918, attending to the sick and wounded until the conclusion of hostilities. He holds the General Service and Victory Medals, and was demobilised in 1919. 79, Old Woolwich Road, Greenwich, S.E.10. BAKER, J. W., Rifleman, Rifle Brigade. He volunteered in May 1916, and in the following September was drafted to France, where he was in action on the Ancre and at Beaumont Hamel. Later, suffering from frost-bite, he was invalided home in February 1917, and on recovery, was sent to Ireland. Subsequently, however, owing to illness, he was sent to hospital at Ipswich and was eventually discharged, as medically unfit for further service in May 1919, holding the General Service and Victory Medals. 38, Felton Road, Greenwich, S.E.10. BAKER, K. (Miss), Special War Worker. From November 1916 until December 1918 this lady was engaged on important work at Messrs. Vickery's, Old Kent Road. She was employed on the production of hand grenades and fuses, and carried out her duties in a highly commendable manner. 5, Faulkner Street, New Cross, S.E.14. BAKER, L. T., Pte., Queen's Own (Royal West Kent Regiment). He volunteered in November 1915, and in January of the following year was drafted to the Western Front, where he fought in the Battles of Albert, Vimy Ridge, Ploegsteert Wood, and was wounded on the Somme in October 1916. He remained for about eighteen months under treatment in England and after rejoining his unit in France in March 1918, took part in much heavy fighting throughout the Retreat and Advance of that year. He holds the General Service and Victory Medals, and was demobilised in February 1919. 19, Greenfell Street, Greenwich, S.E.10. BAKER, R., Driver, R.A.S.C. (M.T.) He volunteered in September 1914, and a year later was drafted to Egypt, where he saw much service. Transferred to Mesopotamia, he served at Kut, Baghdad and various other places, and afterwards proceeded to India. Attached to the Staff Headquarters, he rendered valuable services at Bom-bay and Calcutta until returning home for demobilisation in June 1919. He holds the 1914-15 Star, and the General Service and Victory Medals. 58, Hales Street, Deptford, S.E.8. BAKER, R., Private, 6th Duke of Cornwall's L.I. He enlisted in July 1914, and in February of the following year was drafted to France. He was in action at Bourlon Wood and Delville Wood, and was wounded and invalided home, but returning to France in September 1917, was shortly afterwards again wounded at Ypres. He was subsequently discharged on account of his injuries in October 1918, and holds the 1914-15 Star, and the General Service and Victory Medals. 26, Ruby St., Peckham, S.E.15. BAKER, T., Private, R.A.V.C., Gunner, R.F.A., and R.G.A. An ex-soldier, having previously fought in the Boer War, he rejoined in July 1916. He took part in various operations on the Western Front and also served throughout the Retreat and Allied Advance of 1918, at the termination of which he proceeded with the Army of Occupation to Germany. He was demobilised in July 1919, and holds in addition to the Queen's and King's South African Medals (with five bars), the General Service and Victory Medals. 45, Malham Road, Forest Hill, S.E.23. BAKER, T. H., Air Mechanic, R.A.F. He joined in November 1916, and in the following year proceeded to France, and was present during the fighting at Arras, Bullecourt, Poperinghe and Amiens. He did much valuable work with the Kite Balloon Section, and was engaged in laying telephone wires, and later as an operator. Demobilised in February 1919, he holds the General Service and Victory Medals. 4, Pennethorne Road, Peckham, S.E.15. BAKER, W. A., Driver, R.F.A. Shortly after volunteering in April 1915, he proceeded to the Western Front, where he saw severe fighting in various sectors. He took part in the Battles of Loos, the Somme, Arras and Ypres and many other important engagements and also served through the Retreat and Advance of 1918. He contracted influenza and unhappily died at Brussels in February 1919. He was entitled to the 194-15 Star, and the General Service and Victory Medals. "Steals on the ear the distant triumph song." 115, Perry Rise, Sydenham, S.E.26. BAKER, W., Pte., 5th Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers. Joining in May 1916, he was drafted to Salonika in the following December and served in various engagements on the Struma front. After about nine months he proceeded to Egypt and took part in the Palestine campaign at Gaza and Jaffa. In 1918 he was sent to the Western Front, and was wounded in action in the Advance in September of that year, and was invalided home. After receiving medical treatment in hospital he was demobilised in February 1919, and holds the General Service and Victory Medals. 109, Tuskar Street, Greenwich, S.E.10. BAKER, W. E. J., Private, 1st Royal Fusiliers. He joined in January 1916, and in December of the same year was drafted to France, where he served on the Ancre and at Vimy Ridge, Bullecourt and numerous other engagements. He was unfortunately killed in action in May 1917, and was entitled to the General Service and Victory Medals. "Whilst we remember, the sacrifice is not in vain." 38, Pelton Road, Greenwich, S.E.10. BAKER, W. S., Private, R.M.L.I. Mobilised in August 1914, he was posted to H.M.S. "Marmora," in which he did important escort, patrol and convoy duties. He saw much service in the Atlantic Ocean, the Meditereanean Sea and off the Coast of Africa. Demobilised in January 1919, he holds the 1914-15 Star, and the General Service and Victory Medals. 46, Burchell Road, Peckham, S.E.15. BAKER, W. W., Driver, R.F.A. He volunteered in April 1915, and in the following December proceeded to France, where he fought and was wounded in the vicinity of Arras. After receiving treatment he returned to the fighting area, but unfortunately was again wounded at Ypres in November 1916. Later he rejoined his unit and took part in engagements until hostilities ceased. He holds the 1914-15 Star, and the General Service and Victory Medals, and in February 1919 was demobilised. 29, Galleywall Road, Rotherhithe, S.E.16. BALCHEN, A. T., Private, R.A.S.C. (M.T.) Volunteering in November 1914, he was sent to France in the following year, and was engaged on important transport duties, conveying ammunition, stores and rations to the Front in various sectors. In 1917 he was transferred to the Royal Warwickshire Regiment and drafted to Italy, being frequently in action. After returning to England, he was demobilised in April 1919, and holds the 1914-15 Star, and the General Service and Victory Medals. 18, Creed Place, Greenwich, S.E.10. BALCOMBE, J., Pte., Queen's (Royal West Surrey Regiment). Volunteering in December 1914, he proceeded to France in the following year, and took part in numerous engagements. Transferred to Salonika at the end of 1915, he served on the Doiran and Vardar fronts, but later unhappily contracted malaria, from which he died in July 1916.
