In this theatre of war he took part in the Battles of Mons, Le Cateau, the Marne, the Aisne, Ypres (I and II), where he was wounded, Loos, Ploegsteert, Vermelles, the Somme, Arras, Bullecourt, and was wounded and gassed at Martinpuich in October 1917. He was invalided home and discharged in July 1918, as medically unfit for further service. He holds the Mons Star, and the General Service and Victory Medals. 1, Selden Road, Peckham, S.E.15. BATES, H. W., Signalman, R.N. He joined the Navy in May 1913, at thirteen years of age, and underwent his training in H.M.S. "Warspite." Afterwards he was transferred to H.M.S. "Iron Duke," and later did duty in H.M.S. "Cassandra," being transferred from that vessel only two days before she was blown up. Subsequently he served in H.M.S. "New Zealand," in which vessel Admiral Jellicoe made his tour. He holds the 1914-15 Star, and the General Service and Victory Medals, and in 1920 was serving in H.M.S. "Voyager " off the Coast of Ireland. 79, Florence Road, New Cross, S.E.14. BATES, J., Gunner, R.N. He joined in July 1916, and after a period of training was commissioned to H.M.S. "Royal Sovereign." He was engaged on secret service duties in the Dardanelles, the North Sea, and in many other waters, and did continuously good work. In 1920 he was still serving, and holds the General Service and Victory Medals. 40, Garsdale Road, Peckham, S.E.15. BATES, J. H., Sergt., Essex Regiment. He volunteered in October 1914, at the age of fifty, having previously served with the Army in India. Although overage for foreign service he did very valuable work with his units until the cessation of hostilities. Unfortunately he afterwards contracted an illness to which he succumbed on August 5th, 1919. "His memory is cherished with pride." 79, Florence Road, New Cross, S.E.14. BATES, J. J. G., Corporal, R.A.M.C. He was mobilised at the outbreak of hostilities, having previously served for many years. He took part in the Retreat from Mons, being mentioned in Despatches for his gallantry and devotion to duty during the Retreat. Afterwards he was sent to the 39th General Hospital at Le Havre, and rendered skilled and valuable services there until his demobilisation in February 1919. He holds the Mons Star, and the General Service and Victory Medals. 79, Florence Road, New Cross, S.E.14. BATES, J. T., Private, 3rd Middlesex Regiment. He joined in September 1917, and later in the same year was drafted to the Western Front. In this theatre of war he took part in several engagements, including those at Vimy Ridge, Bullecourt, Passchendaele, and in the Retreat and Advance of 1918. He returned home, but re-engaged for a further period of three years, and in 1920 was serving in Malta. He holds the General Service and Victory Medals. 33, Hughes Fields, Deptford Green, S.E.8. BATES, S., A.B., Royal Navy. He joined in March 1916, and after a period of training was commissioned to H.M.S. "Craigenbrock," and served on dangerous mine sweeping duties in the North Sea, and in the English Channel. Later he was transferred to the Tank Corps, and in 1920 was still serving. He holds the General Service and Victory Medals. 40, Garsdale Road, Peckham, S.E.15. BATES, T., Mechanic, R.A.F. He joined in August 1918, and after a period of training was engaged at various stations on important clerical duties with his unit. He was unable to obtain a transfer overseas owing to medical unfitness, but rendered valuable services until his demobilisation in February 1919. 165, Hollydale Road, Peckham, S.E.15. BATES, T. A., Private, R.A.S.C. He volunteered in October 1914, and was quickly drafted overseas. During his service on the Western Front, he took an active part in several engagements, including the Battles of La Bassee, Ypres, Neuve Chapelle, Loos, Arras, Bullecourt, Cambrai, and in the Retreat and Advance of 1918. He was demobilised in March 1919, and holds the 1914 Star, and the General Service and Victory Medals. 33, Hughes Fields, Deptford Green, S.E.8. BATES, T. H., Driver, R.A.S.C. (H.T.) Volunteering in March 1915, he proceeded to Salonika in the following August on the completion of his training. Whilst serving in the Balkans he did excellent work with the horse transport until February 1916, when he was invalided home suffering from malaria. After convalescence he was engaged on important duties at various stations, and was demobilised in February 1919. He holds the 1914-15 Star, and the General Service and Victory Medals. 79, Florence Road, New Cross, S.E.14. BATES, W., L/Cpl., 1st Duke of Cornwall's L.I. He joined the Army in March 1912, and when war broke out in August 1914, was immediately drafted to France, where he took part in the Battles of Mons, the Marne, the Aisne, and La Bassee, and was wounded in May 1915. Later he served at Salonika, and in Mesopotamia where he contracted malaria. He was discharged in November 1918, as medically unfit for further service. He joined in March 1917, and was shortly afterwards drafted to the Western Front. There he took part in several engagements, including the Battles of Arras, Ypres, Amiens, and Albert, where he was gassed in action, and consequently invalided home. He was demobilised in September 1919, and holds the General Service and Victory Medals. 8, Liardet Street, New Cross, S.E.14. BATT, W., Corporal, Military Mounted Police. Having previously served in the South African Campaign, he volunteered in November 1914, and was shortly afterwards drafted to France. There he was engaged on important duties in various sectors, including those of Ypres, Arras, Albert, and Cambrai, and was also present during the Retreat and Advance of 1918. He was demobilised in July 1919, and holds the Queen's and King's South African Medals, the 1914-15 Star, and the General Service and Victory Medals. 29, Bevington Street, Bermondsey, S.E.16. BATTMAN, W. H., Corporal, K.R.R.C. He joined in November 1916, and on completing his training later in the same year was drafted to the Western Front, where he took part in much severe fighting in the Arras sector, and was badly wounded in May 1917. As a result he unfortunately suffered amputation of his right arm, and was invalided home, and later discharged in August 1918. He holds the General Service and Victory Medals. 15, Nutcroft Road, Peckham, S.E.15. BAUGH, C. J., Pte., Q.O. (Royal West Kent Regt.) He joined in December 1916, and was drafted to India in February 1917. Early in the following year he was sent to Mesopotamia, and took part in severe fighting in many engagements, including those at Baghdad and Mosul. He returned to England, and was demobilised in May 1919, and holds the General Service and Victory Medals. 264, Sangley Road, Catford, S.E.6. BAUGHN, J. (M.M.), Sergt., Queen's (Royal West Surrey Regiment). A Reservist he was mobilised at the declaration of war, and took part in the Retreat from Mons. He also fought in the Battles of La Bassee, Ypres, Neuve Chapelle, and Bullecourt, and was awarded the Military Medal for gallantry. Later he was unfortunately taken prisoner at Passchendaele. During his captivity he was interned at Limburg, Westphalia. In December 1918, he was repatriated, and holds in addition to the Military Medal, the Mons Star, the General Service, and Victory Medals. He was still serving in 1920. 38, Revelon Road, Brockley, S.E.4. BAULCH, W. H., A.B., Royal Navy. He joined the Royal Navy in July 1912, and at the outbreak of war in August 1914, proceeded to sea on board H.M.S. "Legion." He served with the Grand Fleet on important patrol duties, and also took part in the Landing at the Dardanelles, whilst on board H.M.S. "Ark Royal." He did con-tinuously good work throughout hostilities, and was discharged in December 1919. He holds the 1914-15 Star, and the General Service and Victory Medals. 11, Windmill Lane, Deptford, S.E.8. BAULSON, F., Petty Officer, R.N. He joined the Royal Navy in 1907, and when war broke out quickly proceeded to sea. He took part in the Bombardment of enemy positions in German East Africa, and the Dardanelles, and was wounded in action. He was in H.M.S. "Irresistible" when she was sunk in March 1915, at the Battles of the Narrows, but was fortunately rescued. He performed good work throughout hostilities, and received his discharge in November 1919. He holds the 1914-15 Star, and the General Service and Victory Medals. 58, Oarehoro Road, Deptford, S.E.8. BAX, H. S., Private, 7th East Surrey Regiment. He volunteered in November 1914, and in the following year was drafted to the Western Front. There he took part in several important engagements, including the Battles of Loos and St. Eloi. In July 1916, he saw some heavy fighting at Albert, where he was unfortunately killed in action. He was entitled to the 1914-15 Star, and the General Service and Victory Medals.
