CARTER, G., Driver, R.A.S.C. Shortly after volunteering in October 1915, he was drafted to the Western Front, where he was engaged in conveying food to the forward areas. He also took an active part in the Battles of Vimy Ridge, the Somme, Bullecourt, Ypres and Passchendaele and other engagements before being invalided home in June 1918. He was finally demobilised in February 1919, and holds the 1914-15 Star, and the General Service and Victory Medals.
46, Dacca Street, Deptford, S.E.8.

CARTER, G., Corporal, 15th (The King's) Hussars. He volunteered early in August 1914, but owing to being over age for duty abroad, was unable to proceed to a theatre of war. Nevertheless he did very valuable work with the 14th Reserve Cavalry until May 1915, when he was discharged as medically unfit for further service.

CARTER, G. A., Trooper, 3rd (Prince of Wales') Dragoon Guards. He volunteered at the outbreak of war in August 1914, and shortly afterwards proceeded to the Western Front, where he took part in the Battles of La Basse and Vermelles, and many other important engagements. He died gloriously on the Field of Battle at Ypres in 1916. He was entitled to the 1914 Star and the General Service and Victory Medals.

CARTER, G. R., Pte., 1st North Staffordshire Regt. He joined in October 1917, and in April of the following year was drafted to the Western Front, where he served with the Labour Corps in various sectors. He was engaged chiefly in guarding prisoners of war at Boulogne, and was also on escort duties before returning home for demobilisation in March 1919. He holds the General Service and Victory Medals.
99, Glengall Road, Peckham, S.E.15.

CARTER, G. W., 1st Class Stoker, R.N. He enlisted in February 1912. and after the outbreak of war in August 1914 served in H.M.S. "Boadicea" and "Astria" and other vessels. Attached to the Grand Fleet in the North Sea, he took part in the Battles of Heligoland Bight and Jutland, and in many minor actions, and afterwards served in German East African waters. He was discharged in February 1919, and holds the 1914-15 Star, and the General Service and Victory Medals.
49, Ainsty Street, Rotherhithe, S.E.16.

CARTER, H., Private, Royal Fusiliers. He volunteered in January 1915, and in the same year was sent to France, where he was in action at Hill 60, Ypres, Neuve Chapelle, Loos and Bapaume, and was wounded. He was invalided home and was later engaged on important duties until he was demobilised in February 1919, holding the 1914-15 Star, and the General Service and Victory Medals.
5, Ardmere Road, Hither Green, S.E.13.

CARTER, H., A/C.Q.M.S., R.E. Having enlisted in April 1912, he was already serving in Africa when war broke out in August 1914, and was retained there until September 1916. He was then drafted to Mesopotamia, where he was engaged on various important duties, and also took a prominent part in the Relief of Kut and the capture of Baghdad. Returning home in March 1919, he was demobilised in October of that year, and holds the General Service and Victory Medals.
14, Asylum Road, Peckham, S.E.15

CARTER, H. H., Private, Buffs (East Kent Regt.) He volunteered in 1915, and on completing a term of training in the following year, proceeded to the Western Front, where he took part in many important engagements during the Somme Offensive. He was invalided home and discharged in 1916 as medically unfit for further service, suffering from trench feet, and holds the General Service and Victory Medals.
35, Maidenstone Hill, Greenwich, S.E.10.

CARTER, H. J., Private, 1st East Surrey Regiment. Joining in February 1917, he was drafted to the Western Front in September of that year, and there saw severe fighting on the Menin Road, and in other sectors. In November 1917 he was transferred to Italy, where he was in action on the Piave, before returning to France in time to take part in the Retreat of March 1918. He fell fighting on October 20th, 1918, only three weeks before the signing of the Armistice. He was entitled to the General Service and Victory Medals.
99, Glengall Road, Peckham, S.E.15.

CARTER, H. O., Private, Buffs (East Kent Regt.) A serving soldier at the outbreak of hostilities, he was forthwith drafted to France and took part in the Retreat from Mons and in various subsequent engagements. He gave his life for the freedom of England in the severe fighting at Albert in 1916, and was entitled to the Mons Star, and the General Service and Victory Medals.

CARTER, H. T., Rifleman, 11th Rifle Brigade. He volunteered in October 1915, and three months later proceeded to the Western Front, where, after seeing much severe fighting, he was wounded at Albert in June 1916, and admitted to hospital at the Base. He rejoined his unit, however, on his recovery, and was unhappily killed in action on August 29th, 1916. He was entitled to the General Service and Victory Medals.

84, Warwick Street, Deptford, S.E.8.

CARTER, H. W., Sapper, R.E. After volunteering in September 1914, he underwent a period of training prior to being drafted to the Western Front in November 1916. There he served in various sectors, took an active part in the Battles of Arras, Ypres, the Somme and Armentieres and many other engagements, and fought also in the Retreat and Advance of 1918. He was demobilised in March 1919, and holds the General Service and Victory Medals.
82, Creek Road, Deptford, S.E.8.

CARTER, J., Sergt., Royal Welch Fusiliers. He was serving at Khartoum at the outbreak of war, and later was in action in numerous engagements during the Palestine campaign. He took part in the Battle of Gaza, and the capture of Jericho, but later contracting malaria, was invalided home. He was discharged in May 1918 as medically unfit for further service, and holds the 1914-15 Star and the General Service and Victory Medals.
32, Lethbridge Road, Lewisham, S.E.13.

CARTER, J., Private, Labour Corps. He volunteered in December 1915, and on the completion of his training with the Royal West Surrey Regiment crossed to France in March 1916. Three months later he was transferred to the Labour Corps, in which unit he did much excellent work as a sawyer attached to the R.E. at Albert, Arras, Vimy Ridge, Ypres, Cambrai and other sectors of our Front. After his return home he was demobilised in February 1919, and holds the General Service and Victory Medals.
9, Reddins Road, Peckham, S.E.15.

CARTER, J., Stoker, R.N. He joined in June 1916, and first served on board H.M.S. "Donegal," which ship was engaged on important convoy and patrol duties in many waters. He was then transferred to H.M.S. "Bellona" for work of a similar nature in the North Sea. Demobilised in February 1919, after rendering valuable services, he holds the General Service and Victory Medals.
36, Odessa Street, Rotherhithe, S.E.16.

CARTER, J., Pte., 2nd Oxford and Bucks. L.I. He volunteered in September 1914, and four mouths later was drafted to the Western Front, but was almost immediately wounded in the Ypres sector. After hospital treatment at Boulogne, he rejoined his unit and was seriously wounded in action in May 1915. Invalided home he unfortunately suffered amputation of a leg, and was eventually discharged in September 1917. He holds the 1914-15 Star, and the General Service and Victory Medals.
10, St. Nicholas Street, Deptford, S.E.8.

CARTER, J. G., Air Mechanic, R.A.F. He joined in June 1918, and on completion of his training was engaged on important duties in connection with the repairing of aeroplanes. He rendered valuable services, but was unsuccessful in obtaining his transfer overseas and was demobilised in April 1919.
26, Griffin Street, Deptford, S.E.8.

CARTER, J. L., Guardsman, 1st Grenadier Guards. He joined in 1916, and after a period of training was drafted to the Western Front, where he took part in the Battles of Messines, the Somme (II), and the Aisne (III). He laid down his life for King and Country on May 14th, 1918, and was buried at Gizancourt. He was entitled to the General Service and Victory Medals.

73, Elm Grove, Peckham, S.E.15.

CARTER, J. T., Private, The Buffs (East Kent Regt.) He volunteered in February 1915, and proceeding to the Western Front later in the same year took part in severe fighting in many important engagements, including the Battle of the Somme. He died gloriously on the Field of Battle at Albert in 1917, and was entitled to the 1914-15 Star, and the General Service and Victory Medals.

CARTER, J. W., Rifleman, K.R.R.C. He joined in 1917, and on completion of a period of training, was drafted to the Western Front, where he saw severe fighting in various sectors. He took part in the Battle of the Somme, and many other important engagements until the cessation of hostilities, and on his return home in 1920 was demobilised. He holds the General Service and Victory Medals.
