OXFORD AND BUCKS LIGHT INFANTRY



CAPTAIN EGERTON LOWNDES WRIGHT, M.C. (a, 1898-1904) Was born on November 15th, 1885—son of H. L. Wright Esq., of Burnt House, Adlington, Lancashire, and one of four Wykehamist brothers. He entered Culverlea from Mr. H. G. Tylecote's school and became Senior Commoner Prefect : he played in Lords for four years, making a score of 113 against Eton in 1901 when still under 16, and captaining the team in 1903 and 1904 ; he was also captain of Commoner VI, a member of Association XI, and in 1904 in partnership with the Hon. C. N. Bruce he won for Winchester the Public Schools Racquets Championship. At Oxford he fulfilled the athletic promise of his school days. He obtained his Blue for Association his first year and played against Cambridge in 1905 and 1908 ; he was for four years a member of the University Cricket XI (captain in 1907 and 1908), and afterwards played for Lancashire. He took his degree with Honours in Classical Moderations and History and entered the firm of Wilson, Wright and Davies, solicitors, of Manchester and Preston.
At the outbreak of war he obtained a commission in the Bucks Battalion of the Oxford and Bucks Light Infantry and went to France with them in March 1915. He served successively as Adjutant to his battalion and on the staff of a Brigade, an Army Corps and a Division, being twice mentioned in Despatches and receiving the M.C. At the end of 1916 he was appointed Brigade Major to the 6th Infantry Brigade and served in that capacity till his death. He fell in action at Barly on May 11th, 1918.
Captain Wright married in 1911 Miss Violet Shakespear, and left two children.
