CARMICHAEL, GEORGE GORDON, Lieut., 4th (Territorial) Battn. The King’s Own Scottish Borderers, s. of Robert Carmichael, of Rosybank, Coldstream, J.P., Provost of Coldstream, by his wife, Euphemia Bell, dau. of George Dickman; and brother to 2nd Lieut. Archibald Carmichael (q.v.); b. Spittal, by Berwick-on-Tweed, 10 Sept. 1895; educ. Coldstream Public School, and the Royal High School, Edinburgh; enlisted in the King’s Royal Rifles in Nov. 1915; served with the Expeditionary Force in France and Flanders till about May, 1916, when he returned to England, and, after a period of training at Gailes Camp, was gazetted 2nd Lieut. to the King’s Own Scottish Borderers 30 Sept. 1916; promoted Lieut. about May, 1918; served with the Egyptian Expedi-tionary Force in Egypt and Palestine from Oct. 1917, to March, 1918, when he returned to France, and was killed in action at Beugneux 1 Aug. following, while serving with the 1/5th King’s Own Scottish Borderers in the French Army, under General Mangin. Buried near Oulchy la Ville; unm.

LIEUTENANT ISAAC BAYLEY BALFOUR

ROYAL SCOTS

LIEUTENANT ISAAC BAYLEY BALFOUR (F, 1903-1908) was born on October 19th, 1889-son of Professor I. B. Balfour, M.D., D.SC., LL.D., F.L.S., Professor of Botany in the University of Edinburgh-and came to Winchester from Bilton Grange. He was three years in Sixth Book, for his last two years Head of the House and from 1907 to 1908 Senior Commoner Prefect: he also played in Lords in the latter year. In the following October he went up to Magdalen College, Oxford, and graduated with a Second Class in the Final Classical School. He had taken up Art as his profession and had he lived would have specialised in portrait painting.

On the outbreak of war he was gazetted to the 14th Battalion Royal Scots, and was afterwards attached to the Ist Battalion King’s Own Scottish Borderers. He was killed at the Dardanelles on June 28th, 1915, while leading his men to the attack.

Norham-on-Tweed, 14 Feb. 1894; educ. there; was a Baker; enlisted in 2nd King’s Own Scottish Borderers, Oct. 1911; left for France, 14 Aug. 1914, and was killed in action, 9 April, 1915, being shot by a sniper; unm.

SWAN, ANDREW CAMPBELL, Private, No. 7376, 1/4th Battn. King’s Own Scottish Borderers (T.F.), eldest s. of Walter Johnston Swan, of Reston, co. Berwick, Tailor and Clothier, by his wife, Mary Rose, dau. of William Rose, of Duns; b. Reston, 5 July, 1896; educ. Reston Public School; volunteered and enlisted, 23 Nov. 1914; left for the Dardanelles, 25 May, 1915, and died on the hospital ship Asturias, 13 July. 1915, of wounds received in action the previous day; unm. Buried in Base Cemetery at Cape Helles.
