The Lancashire Fusiliers, only s. of the late James Baxter, of 8, Rossie Place, Edinburgh, by his wife, Mary Forbes (Woodburn, Kinellar, Kinaldie, co. Aberdeen), dau. of the late William Forbes Harlaw; b. Edinburgh, 11 March, 1899; educ. Kinellar Public School; enlisted in the Black Watch 11 May, 1917; subsequently transferred to the Lancashire Fusiliers; served with the Expeditionary Force in France from 1 August, 1918, and was killed in action there 2 Oct. following; unm.

BARTLEY, ARTHUR, Private, 1st Battn. (20th Foot) The Lancashire Fusiliers, eldest s. of William Bartley, Miller, by his wife, Margaret; b. Liverpool, co. Lancaster, 24 Jan. 1889; educ. St. Paul’s Church of England Schools, Chester; was a Fireman on the railway; enlisted in the Lancashire Fusiliers in 1908; served with his regiment in India; soon after the outbreak of war proceeded to England, and subsequently to Gallipoli, and served with the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force there, and was killed in action 4 June, 1915. Buried where he fell. He m. at Nuneaton, 13 Feb. 1915, Annie (58, Crane Street, Chester), dau. of Arthur Law; s.p.

Ashby L 2nd Lt 5th Lancashire Fusiliers

ASHBY, LESLIE, 2nd Lieut. 2/5th (Territorial) Battn. The Lancashire Fusiliers, only s. of John Ashby, of Underwood, Whaley Bridge, near Stockport, by his wife, Annie, dau. of Richard Bennett; 6. Whaley Bridge aforesaid, 18 Oct. 1898; educ. Silcoates School, Wakefield, and on leaving there joined the staff of the Manchester and County Bank, Stockport, remaining there until March, 1917, when he Joined the Army, and was sent to a Training Reserve Battn. at Rugeley Camp, co. Stafford; was subsequently recommended for a commission, and attached to the 21st Officers” Cadet Battn., Twezledown Camp, Fleet; obtained his commission in June, 1918, being gazetted to the 4th Battn. Lancashire Fusiliers at Barry and Swansea; served with the Expeditionary Force in France and Flanders from 21 Aug, following, when he was attached to the 2/5th Battn. of his regiment in the 55th Division (West Lancashire), and was killed in action during the attack on Tournai 21 Oct. 1918. Buried in Froidmont Communal Cemetery. His Company Commander, Capt. Broadbent, wrote: “We were fighting for Tournai, and had reached a point one and a half miles from its western outskirts, when we were held up by strong enemy resistance for several days. Second Lieut. Ashby’s platoon was farthest forward when we stopped our advance. I was deeply grieved to lose him he was a promising officer, well liked by his men, and I personally looked on him as a younger brother. His unfailing good-nature and sunny disposition endeared him to us all,” and a brother officer: “He had done some excellent work in pushing out the enemy, and got his men into position, then went out to reconnoitre, when he was fired upon by a sniper and hit. He was much loved by all of us, and was always cheerful and bright and never grumbled.” He was very musical, and often acted as pianist in battalion concerts, both at home and in France; unm.

Thomas A J N Captain 1st Lancashire Fusiliers

CAPTAIN A. J. N. THOMAS Lancashire Fusiliers Elmfield 99-02 Aged 29 April 25th, 1915

ELDER Son of Jocelyn H. W. Thomas (O.H.), J.P., formerly Captain Scots Fusilier Guards, of Belmont, Carlow, Ireland. R.M.C., Sandhurst.

Captain Thomas received his Commission in the Lancashire Fusiliers in 1905, and was promoted Captain in January, 1915. He went to the Front in February, 1915, and was killed at Lancashire Landing, in Gallipoli, on April 25th, 1915.

Carlow, 23 Sept. 1888; educ. Harrow and Sandhurst; gazetted 2nd Lieut, 1st Lancashire Fusiliers, 16 Aug 1905, and promoted Lieut. 29 May, 1909, and Capt. 20 Jan. 1915; served with the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force, and was killed in action during the landing of the Lancashire Fusiliers at Beach W, Gallipoli, 25 April, 1915; unm.
