Argyle, by his wife, Jane, dau. of the late James Tait, of Inverlair, co. Inverness; b. Campbeltown aforesaid; educ. The Grammar School there: went to New Zealand in Oct. Oct. 1903, to join an uncle in Farming; enlisted 7 Feb. 1917; served with the Expeditionary Force in France and Flanders from the following Oct., and was killed in action on the Somme 26 March, 1918; unm.

Northampton, Foreman at Hunsbury Hill Iron Furnaces for over 40 years, by his wife, Harriett Anne, dau. of Henry Billingham; b. New Cottages aforesaid, 1 April, 1890; educ. Rothersthorpe Village School; went to New Zealand in Dec. 1910, and settled at Gisborne, where he was employed as a Slaughterman at Nelson’s Freezing Works; volunteered for Imperial Service, and and joined the Wellington Mounted Rifles in Nov. 1914; left for Egypt in March, 1915; served with the Mediterranean  Expeditionary Force at Gallipoli from 14 Aug. following, and was killed in action in the fight for Achi Baba on the 27th of that month; unm.

Derry; went to New Zealand in Jan. 1913, and settled at Spreydon, Christchurch, as a Farmer and Pork Curer; enlisted 1 Sept. 1917; served with the Expeditionary Force in France and Flanders from April, 1918, and was killed in action at Avesnes, Bapaume, 24 Aug, following. Buried at Avesnes, near Bapaume; unm.

H. Betteley (q.v.); b. Macclesfield, 30 Nov. 1888; educ. Riverside School, Seacombe; subsequently went to New Zealand, where he took up Farming; volunteered for Imperial Service, and joined the New Zealand Infantry early in 1915; served with the Expeditionary Force in France from Oct. of the same year, and was killed in action 5 April, 1918; unm.

BERRYMAN, STANLEY, Lieut., 10th (Nelson) Regt., Canterbury Mounted Rifles, New Zealand Expeditionary Force, s. of Henry Giles Berryman, of Stanley Downs, Nelson. New Zealand, Pastoralist, by his wife, Mary Redman, dau. of John Jones Bowles, of Kent: 5. Waimate, Canterbury, New Zealand, 8 Sept. 1590; educ. Boys’ High School. Ashburton, New Zealand; was Manager of his father’s estates, Mount Noble and Stanley Downs (sheep stations); enlisted 5 Ang 1914, left New Zealand with Main Body Sept. following: served with the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force at Gallipoli from April to Sept. 1915, was twice seriously wounded during that campaign, and invalided to England on recovery took a course of musketry and machine gunnery at Hythe; passed out top of the list with 95 per cent, marks, and awarded a Distinguished certificate; was offered a commission in the Gloucestershire Hussars, which he refused, preferring to rejoin his New Zealand regiment, and was sent back to New Zealand in Sept. 1016; gazetted 2nd Lieut. 10th Canterbury Mounted Rifles 14 Nov. 1916; promoted Lieut. 1 Oct, 1917; served with the Egyptian Expeditionary Force in Egypt and Palestine from 9 Aug. 1917, and was killed in action at Amman, Palestine, 30 March, 1918.

Buried on the Hills of Moabh, about 1,000 yards south of Amman Hill. Lieut. Col. John Findlay wrote: “He did remarkably well, and was a very capable officer”, and the officer in charge of his squadron: “Although he had already been wounded, he refused to leave his post.. His behaviour was splendid,” and another officer: “He was just the same ame dear happy boy until the last; as soldier he was splendid, always the same bright, happy smile and winning way, and very popular with his men.” His Chaplain also wrote: “He was a son to be proud of, possessed of fine character, and setting to others the example of devotion to duty and clean living. He bore the hardships and faced the danger at Gallipoli as a true Britisher, and was held in the highest esteem by all who knew him.” Lieut. Berryman was a keen sportsman; his chief hobby was horses, and his hunters and troop-horses won the championships at the Agricultural and Pastoral Shows in Nelson and Marlborough for seven years in sucensalon (1911 to 1917). He was a good cricketer, frequently selected for first-class matches unm.

Stratton, co. Cornwall, 19 Aug. 1880; educ. Newton Abbot Grammar School; went to New Zealand in 1905, and settled at Wellington as a Farmer; volunteered for foreign service, and enlisted in the Wellington Rifles in Feb. 1915; served with the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force at Gallipoli; subsequently proceeded to France, and was killed in action at Belle Vue Farm on the Selle, 12 Oct. 1918. Buried in Briastre Cemetery; unm.

ASHTON, NORMAN, Corpl., No. 24323, 16th Platoon, 16th Waikato, 2nd Auckland Infantry Battn., New Zealand Expeditionary Force, s. of Thomas Atherton Ashton, of Mount Albert, Auckland, New Zealand, by his wife, Elizabeth Eleanor, dau. of Thomas Pearson, of Pendleton, Manchester; b. Pendleton aforesaid, 12 June, 1881; educ. Point Chevalier Public School, and Prince Albert College, Auckland; was in business as an Indent Agent; joined the 17th Reinforcement 4 April, 1916; left for England 23 Sept.; served with the Expeditionary Force in France and Flanders from 21 Dec. 1916, and was killed in action at Passchendaele 4 Oct. 1917. Buried at the foot of the Ridge. He m. at Mount Albert, Auckland, Methodist Church, 17 Nov. 1915, Grace Florence (Mount Albert, Auckland, New Zealand), dau. of Samuel Edward Shrimpton, of Streatham, London, S.W., and had a son, Desmond Norman, b. 5 Oct. 1916.

Cheshunt, co. Herts, 3 Sept. 1889; educ. Christ Church School, Wanstead; volunteered for Imperial service on the outbreak of war and joined the New Zealand E.F., 15 Dec. 1914; left for Egypt, 13 Feb. 1915; took part in the landing at the Dardanelles, 25-26 April, 1915, and was reported missing on 8 May following, and is now assumed to have been killed in action there between those dates; unm.

He was a well known athlete in Central Otago and was a member of the C.U. Fire Brigade.
