CAMERON, ALEXANDER, Deck Hand, No. 21698, H.M.S. Victory, s. of Norman Cameron, of Colove, Bracadale, Skye, by his wife, Flora. dau. of Charles McIntosh; b. Bracadale aforesaid, 20 Νο. 1894 educ. Struan, Skye was a Ploughman; joined the Navy in July, 1918, and died at Haslar Naval Hospital, Gosport, 30 Sept. following, from pneumonia, contracted while on service. Buried in the Naval Cemetery, Haslar, Gosport; unm.

BYRNE, ERL STANLEY FREDERIC, Midshipman. Royal Naval Reserve, eldest s. of Lient. Col. Stanley Cesnola Byrne, 11th London Regt.. of Elmira. Ribblesdale Road. Hornsey, N., by his wife. Evelyn Robertson, dau. of Charles George Yates King: b. London. 1 March, 1899; educ. Tollington School. Muswell Hill. N., and on H.M. Training Ship Worcester. off Greenhithe gazetted Midshipman Royal Naval Reserve 1 Jan. 1917: served on H.M.S. Excellent and H.M.S. Amphitrite: appointed to H.M.D. Torrent the following Feb., and was lost at sea when that ship was blown up in the North Sea 23 Dec. 1917, by a mine or enemy torpedo. He was mentioned in Despatches for coolness under fire during action in June. 1917, when an enemy destroyer was sunk. Midshipman Byrne was at one time put in charge of a captured enemy steamship with a small crew, and brought the ship into an English port, though it necessitated standing over the enemy stokers for a time with a loaded revolver. During a gale in Nov. he was washed overboard, and as all the boats were stove in it was impossible to attempt a rescue, but another wave washed him on beard again:

BRAINE, CARL SVEND, Acting Lieut.. Royal Naval Reserve, 4th 8. of George Duncan Braine, of Kirkmichael, Galton Road, Westcliff-on-Sea. co. Essex, Trinity House Pilot, by his wife. Mary Emslie, dau. of Capt. William Robertson, of Peterhead, co. Aberdeen. Merchant Service: b.8 June. 1894; edue. Lindisfarne College, Westcliff-on-Sea, and H.M.S. Conway. Rock Ferry, co. Chester: joined the Clan Line of Glasgow as Midshipman in 1910; obtained 2nd Mate’s Certificate in 1913: appointed 5th Officer R.M.S.P. Trent: gazetted Midshipman Royal Naval Reserve in 1911 on the outbreak of war in Aug. 1914. appointed Sub-Lieut. H.M.S. Hildebrand, 10th Cruiser Squadron; volunteered for special service, and from Oct. 1917. served on H.M.S. Anchusa, which was then fitted out as a mystery ship, and was lost at sea when that ship was torpedoed by enemy submarine 16 July, 1918. A survivor wrote: “A better officer to serve under I will never find.” and Lieut. Broadbent, Commander School Ship Conway: “He served his country loyally and most usefully for four years, and died a sailor’s death ….unflinchingly.” Uum.

BENJAMIN, JOHN DUXFIELD, Lieut Royal Naval Reserve, of Samuel John Benjamin, of Fairholme, Cobden Street, Darlington, by his wife. Anne Isabella, dau, of John Duxfield Bell. of Newcastle-on-Tyne: b. Darlington, co. Durham, 25 Jan, 1880; edue. Bondgate Higher Grade School there, and on leaving school, served for about a year as a Telegraphist at the Darlington Post Office, where he gained useful experi ence in the Morse Code of Signalling: subsequently served his apprenticeship with Messrs, Walter Runciman & Co., Ship Owners, Newcastle-on-Tyne, on the S.S. Tollochmoor, taking certificates as 2nd Mate, 1st Mate, and Master, and served as First Officer on the S.S. Queensland, belonging to Messrs. Hudsous, of Sunderland joined the Royal Naval Reserve as Sub-Lieut. in Oct, 1916, and was promoted Lient, with Seniority dating Jan. 1917, being given command of one of H.M.T. on Patrol Convoy duty, and was drowned when his ship was sunk by a mine in the North Sea 12 Sept. 1917. Commander Parnell wrote expressing his sympathy. and added: “It may be sotme consolation to you to know that he was in active discharge of his duty when the moment came for him to end his toils.” and a brother officer: “Your husband I knew well, and reckoned him amongst my best friends at this base. He was to me one of the best. and he will be sadly missed, not only by myself, but by all his brother officers here, and by whom he was universally esteemed. Lieut. Benjamin undoubtedly carried out the finest traditions, and was lost with his ship at his post and doing his duty.” Hem. at St. John’s Church, Darlington, 2 Ang. 1910, Margaret Allee (64, Eastbourne Road. Darlington), dan, of Samuel Leyton, of Sunderland, and had two children: John Duxfield, b. 14 Feb. 1916, and Margaret Alice Isabel, b. 28 June, 1912.

Midshipman NEWTON WYNNE APPERLEY, R.N.R., was the son of Captain N. W. Apperley, M.V.O., J.P., South End, Durham, and was born in 1894. Не came to the School as a Day Boy in May, 1909, and left in April, 1910, to join H.M. Training Ship “Mersey,” White Star Line, in which he made two voyages to Australia. His third voyage, which would have completed his training for the Merchant Service, never took place on account of the war, and he joined the R.N.R. as a Midshipman in September, 1914. After a fortnight on H.M.S. “Excellent,” Whale Island, he joined H.M.S. “Emperor of India,” 4th Battle Squadron, Admiral Duff’s Flagship, in which he spent nearly two years with the Grand Fleet. In July, 1916, he joined H.M.S. “Virginian,” 10th Cruiser Squadron, patrolling between Iceland and the Shetland Islands. He was admitted into hospital in October, 1916, and was discharged from the Navy as medically unfit, with a pension, in January, 1917. He never recovered from the effects of his illness, and eventually died at home on June 20th, 1918.

He was a member of the Marine Service Association.

ANTRAM, HERBERT WILKINS, Lieut., R.N.R., s. of the Rev. Charles Edward Potts Antram, of Longport House, Canterbury, co. Kent, by his wife, Alice Hurry, dau. of Henry Hunter Golding; b. Liverpool, 8 April, 1892; educ. Guildford Grammar School Stonleigh, Woking, and Stanley House, Margate; was in the Merchant Service; received a commission in the Royal Naval Reserve in July, 1915, and was appointed to H.M.S. Pembroke 3 Aug. following; to H.M.S. Otway, 10th Cruiser Squadron, 20 Sept. of the same year; transferred to the submarine service in Nov. 1916; served on H.M.S. Titania and H.M.S. Dolphin, and was lost in collision in the North Sea 31 Jan. 1918. Hem. at Canterbury, 23 March, 1917, Marjorie Lester (Longport House, Canterbury), dau. of the late Alexander Buskin, of India, and had a dau., Monica Blyth Antram. b. (posthumous) 3 April, 1918.

Trounson G F J Midshipman HMS Good Hope Royal Naval Reserve

TROUNSON, GRAHAM FRANCIS JAMES, Midshipman, R.N.R., only child of Francis Thomas Trounson, of Onslow Mansions, Richmond, Surrey, by his wife, Kate E., dau. of Thomas Martin, of Chelmsford; b. London, 11 June, 1897; educ. The Whitegift and Mersey training ship for White Star Officers; Cadet R.N.R., 1911; Midshipman (Proby.), Jan. 1914; appointed to H.M.S. Good Hope, 2 Aug., and was lost when that ship was sunk in the Naval action off Coronel, on the coast of Chili, 1 Nov. 1914. He had the unique experience, in so short a life of having travelled the world as a cadet, and Midshipman, in sail The Mersey, in steam The Cevarmic, and in H.M.S. Good Hope. He had been round the Horn six times.

TINNE, ERNEST PERCY JAMES, Lieut., R.N.R., 4th s. of John Ernest Tinne, of Liverpool, Merchant; b. Aigburth, Liverpool, 30 Dec. 1882; educ. Liverpool College, and H.M.S. Conway; joined the R.N.R., and became Lieut., Oct. 1909; joined H.M.S. Hogue at Chatham, 3 Aug. 1914, and was lost when that ship was torpedoed in the North Sea, 22 Sept. 1914. He m. at Paignton, South Devon, 4 May, 1907, Annie Amelia Kate, dau. of (-) Bartlett, and had three children: Maurice Herman James, b. 21 Feb. 1914; Hester Petronella, b. 26 Feb. 1908, and Margery Bertha Denise, b. 31 Oct. 1909.
