He was the son of D. W. Stable Esq., J.P., of Wanstead, Essex, and came to Winchester from The Wells House School, Malvern Wells. He passed into Sandhurst in 1905 and in 1907 obtained his commission in the Royal Welsh Fusiliers, joining the 2nd Battalion at Agra late in that year. He served six years in Burma and India, where he made a reputation as a polo player, and returned home in 1913.
