He joined the firm of Vivian, Gray, and Co. during the South African boom and became a member of the Stock Exchange in the year 1901. Later, he joined in partnership with E. W. Bose and Co. as a jobber.<\/p>\n<p>At the outbreak of war, being then forty-two years of acted for some time as a Special Constable before receiving his commission as a lieutenant in the R.N.V.R.
