Château des Ravalet Tourlaville
A postcard sent from Pte Edgar Sloggett to his father at 55, Eagle Street, Red Lion Square, Holborn, London. The postcard shows Château des Ravalet Tourlaville France, although it’s name has been obliterated by the censor. It has an Army Post Office stamp and Passed By Censor no 5252. It is in an oval stamp which was introduced by the British Army in January 1917. The 5252 represents the unique individual identification number of the censoring officer or the specific stamp allocation.
The postcard reads.
Dear Dad, I thought I would send a card to let you know I haven’t forgot you. This Chateau is just near the rest camp where we are
staying. Please remember me to all at home.
This was our first camp did not get a chance to post it before.
Pte Ernest Sloggett
Edgar Ernest Sloggett was born on the 28th February 1896 in St Pancras, London. He was the youngest son of William John and Sarah Frances Sloggett. On the outbreak of war he enlisted in The Surrey Yeomanry (Queen Mary’s Regiment). He was demobilised on the 15th March 1919.
After the war Edgar worked as a wood carver and married Doris Amy Warren on the 30th August 1921. He died on the 2nd June 1984 aged 88.
