BARRELL, ALFRED JAMES, L.-Corpl. (Bandsman), Royal Navy, H.M.O. Bulwark, s. of James Barrell, French Polisher, H.M. Dockyard, Portsmouth, by his wife, Alice Mathilda, dau. of George Knight; b. Portsea, co. Hants, 18 Oct. 1878; educ. St. John’s Church of England School there; was a Professional Violinist; joined the Royal Navy as a Bandsman in 1895; served in the Commander-in-Chief’s Band, Portsmouth, for many years, and subsequently at Whale Island; after the outbreak of war, joined H.M.S. Bulwark, and was lost when that ship was blown up at Sheerness 26 Nov. 1914. He m. 19 Dec. 1900, Lottie, dau. of Thomas Tatford, and had three children: Herbert Alfred James, b. 20 Oct. 1908; Aubrey Gordon, b. 13 Jan. 1913, and Gladys Lottie, b. 25 Oct. 1901.
