BARRATT, ALBERT ERNEST, Private, No. 1365, 7th (Territorial) Battn. The Duke of Cambridge’s Own (Middlesex Regt.), s. of Ernest Barratt, of Tottenham, London, N., by his wife, Caroline, dau. of William Kenny; b. Leicester, 29 April, 1892; educ. Coleraine Park, Tottenham, N., aforesaid; was a Bootmaker; joined the Territorial Force in June, 1911; was mobilized on the outbreak of war in Aug. 1914; served with the Expeditionary Force in France and Flanders from 13 March, 1915, and died at Merville Casualty Clearing Station 28 Nov. 1916, from wounds received in action at Neuve Chapelle the same day. An officer wrote: “Of all the men in my platoon, your husband was the most popular.. With a keen sense of duty, he proved himself daily to be one of those heroes whom we cannot afford to lose.” He m. at Tottenham, N., 1 Feb. 1913, Frances (45, Scales Road, Tottenham, N.), dau. of J. G. Ellis, and had a son, Ernest Albert.

BARRAND, SYDNEY, Lieut., 1st Battn. (60th Foot) The King’s Royal Rifle Corps, 2nd s. of Charles Barrand, of 134, Woodhouse Lane, Leeds, Furnisher and Cabinet Maker, by his wife, Alice, dau. of J. S. Bromley; b. Leeds educ. Leeds Modern School, and Henderson Bunnen Institute; was an Adjutant in the Leeds Boys’ Brigade; on the outbreak of war enlisted in the R.A.M.C. 14 Aug. 1914; served with the Expeditionary Force in France and Flanders from the following Oct.; returned to England in Jan. 1916, and after a period of training was gazetted 2nd Lieut. King’s Royal Rifle Corps 7 July following; and promoted Lieut. 7 Jan. 1918; went back to France in Aug. 1916; was wounded at Miramont in Feb. 1917; on recovery re-joined his unit in France, and was killed in action south-east of Arras 14 Aug. 1918. Buried at St. Amand, near Arras. An officer wrote: “We all knew him to be a brave, honest and true comrade.” Unm.

BARR, JAMES H., Lieut., 12th (Service) Battn. The Royal Irish Rifles, William Barr, of 9, Aubrey Street, Derry, Printer, by his wife, Henrietta, dau. of James Hamilton; b. Londonderry, 5 Feb. 1897; educ. Foyle College, and Queen’s University, Belfast; joined the 18th Cadets, Royal Irish Rifles, in Oct. 1915; gazetted 2nd Lieut. in Aug. 1916; promoted Lieut. in Feb. 1918; served with the Expeditionary Force in France and Flanders from Sept. 1916, and was killed in action at Neuve Eglise 1 Sept. 1918. Buried there. Lieut. Barr had a distinguished scholastic career; he gained medals in Intermediate, Latin and Greek in 1913, and exhibitions in junior, middle and senior grades; also was awarded the Irish Society’s Leaving Scholarship and an entrance Scholarship in Queen’s University, Belfast. The Head Master of Foyle College wrote: “A truer or more generous, straightforward lad never passed through Foyle College.” Unm.

BARR, DONALD ROBERTSON, D.C.M., Coy. Sergt.-Major, No. 200205, 1/5th (Territorial) Battn. Princess Louise’s (Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders), 8. of the late David Barr, Foreman Timekeeper, Greenock Corporation, by his wife, Catherine (47, Crawford Street, Greenock), dau. of Janet Stewart: b. Greenock, co. Renfrew, 20 July, 1896; educ. Glebe Public School there; joined the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders Territorials 17 Feb. 1913; was called up on mobilization 5 Aug. 1914; served with the Expeditionary Force in Egypt, Peninsula and Palestine; thereafter in France and Flanders from 22 May, 1915, and died at No. 3 Eastern General Hospital, Cambridge, 3 Nov. 1918, of wounds received in action in front of Ypres 14 Oct. previously. Buried in Greenock Cemetery. He was awarded the D.C.M. and the Croix de Guerre, for gallant and distinguished service on the field; unm.

BARNSLEY, HARRY, Private, No. 43874, 2/8th (Territorial) Battn. The Worcestershire Regt., s. of Harry Barnsley, of 423, Park Road, Hockley, Birmingham, Painter; b. Handsworth, Birmingham, 27 Jan. 1883, educ. Benson Road Board School, Soho, Birmingham; enlisted 25 June, 1918; served with the Expeditionary Force in France and Flanders, and was killed in action at Levantie 2 Oct following, during his first day in the firing line. Buried in Anzac Cemetery, Sailly-sur-la-Lys. He m. at St. Luke’s, Bristol Road, Birmingham, 23 Dec. 1906, Elizabeth May (101, Albert Road, Handsworth, Birmingham), fourth dau. of Joseph Yates, and had two children: Stanley Eric, b. 4 Oct. 1911, and Margaret Elizabeth, b. 16 March, 1916.
