BROOKE, PATRICK HARRY, Sub-Lieut., Royal Navy, s. of Capt. Harry Vesey Brooke, of Fairley. Countesswells, J.P., D.L., by his wife, Patricia, only child of James Gregory Moir Byres, J.P., of Tonley, co. Aberdeen and brother to Capt. J. A. O. Brooke, V.C. (see Vol. I., page 54), and to Capt. H. B. Brooke (q.r.); b. Countesswell, co. Aberdeen, 21 May, 1895; educ. Winton House. Osborne and Dartmouth Naval Colleges; joined the Navy as a Midshipman in 1912; promoted Sub-Lieut. in 1915; was appointed to H.M.S. Indomitable: saw service at the Dardanelles in 1915; took part in the Dogger Bank Battle in the North Sea that year, and died at the Royal Naval Hospital, Plymouth, 25 May, 1917, from enteric fever, contracted while on active service. Buried at Aberdeen unm.

BRIGGS, HARRY, Petty Officer, H.M.S. Black Prince, elder s. of the mate Regtl.-Quartermaster-Sergt. John Briggs (q.v.), by his wife, Margaret (20, Hunter’s Avenue, Ayr), dau. of Capt. John Murdoch; b. in 1891; educ. Ayr; entered the Navy, and served in H.M.S. St. Vincent, H.M.S. Illustrious, H.M.S. Prince of Wales, and had just left H.M.S. Bulwark before she was blown up, and was killed in action at the Battle of Jutland 31 May, 1916, while serving on H.M.S. Black Prince.

BRADDON, HUBERT FREDERICK, 1st Class Boy, H.M.S. Bellerophon, Koyal Navy, . of Frederick Braddon, of 29. Fort Street, Barnstaple, by his wife. Edith, dau. of S. Dening, of Barnstaple, co. Devon b. Barnstaple, 31 Oct. 1900 edue. Blue Coat School there: Joined the Navy in Oct. 1916 was appointed to H.M.S. Bellerophon, and died on H.M. Hospital Ship Classic 5 July, 1918, from meningitis, contracted while on naval service, Buried at Barnstaple. A large Celtic cross has been erected to his memory in Barnstaple Cemetery by his shipmates of H.M.S. Bellerophon: unm.

BEST, ALFRED JAMES, Able Seaman, No. Z. 78397, H.M.S. General Wolfe, Royal Navy, s. of the late George Best, of 43, Perry Street, Chatham, Skilled Dockyard Labourer, by his wife, Susan, 6th dau. of Alfred Clout; b. 23 April, 1900; educ. St. John’s Church of England School there joined the Royal Navy 30 Aug. 1917; served on H.M.S. Wolfe from 20 Dec. following, and died at the Royal Naval Hospital, Chatham, 8 Nov. 1918, of pneumonia, following influenza, contracted while on active service. Buried in Chatham Cemetery. His Commander wrote: “We regret to inform you of the death of your son who, together with his gun team, displayed gallantry in serving the gun in face of heavy shell fire from shore batteries off the Belgian coast in Oct. last, and who has been recommended accordingly.” Unm.

BATES, WILLIAM DANIEL, H.M.S. Vanguard, s. of (-) Bates; b. Tottenham, N.; educ. Seven Sisters School there joined the Navy 9 July, 1913 served on H.M.S. Vanguard, and was drowned 9 July, 1917, through an internal explosion on that ship.

BARTLETT, FREDERICK DUDLEY, Leading Stoker, (1st Class), Royal Navy, H.M.S. Queen Mary, s. of Charles Bartlett, of Portsmouth, by his wife, Laura, dau. of George James; b. Portsmouth, co. Hants, 29 June, 1892; educ. Arundel Street C.C. School; was employed at Hilsea Gas House; joined the Royal Navy in 1910; served in H.M.S. Queen Mary, and was killed in action when that ship was sunk in the Jutland Battle 31 May, 1916: unm.

BARRELL, ALFRED JAMES, L.-Corpl. (Bandsman), Royal Navy, H.M.O. Bulwark, s. of James Barrell, French Polisher, H.M. Dockyard, Portsmouth, by his wife, Alice Mathilda, dau. of George Knight; b. Portsea, co. Hants, 18 Oct. 1878; educ. St. John’s Church of England School there; was a Professional Violinist; joined the Royal Navy as a Bandsman in 1895; served in the Commander-in-Chief’s Band, Portsmouth, for many years, and subsequently at Whale Island; after the outbreak of war, joined H.M.S. Bulwark, and was lost when that ship was blown up at Sheerness 26 Nov. 1914. He m. 19 Dec. 1900, Lottie, dau. of Thomas Tatford, and had three children: Herbert Alfred James, b. 20 Oct. 1908; Aubrey Gordon, b. 13 Jan. 1913, and Gladys Lottie, b. 25 Oct. 1901.

BAILEY, LEONARD, Petty Officer, 1st Class, Royal Navy, H.M.S. Invincible. 2nd s. of Thomas Bailey, Labourer, by his wife, Agnes, dau. of J. Goldring b. Pagham, near Bognor, co. Sussex; educ, there joined the Royal Navy 5 Feb. 1899; on the outbreak of war served on H.M.S. Invincible, taking part in the actions at Heligoland 28 Aug. 1914, and the Falkland Islands 8 Dec. following, and was killed in action at the Jutland Battle 31 May, 1916. He m. at Felpham Parish Church, Bognor, 24 Nov. 1906, Lucy Agnes, dau. of Charles Gurr, and had four children: Edwin Thomas, b. 7 Dee. 1908; Leonard Charles, b. 7 April, 1909; Walter, b. 23 June, 1913, and Lucy Ada, b. 30 Sept. 1911.

ARNOLD, JOHN SAMUEL, Armourer, R.N., H.M.S. Invincible, 3rd s. of John Samuel Arnold, of Richmond, by his wife, Sophia; b. Richmond, co. Surrey, 7 May, 1879; educ. there joined the R.N. in 1896; served in H.M.S. Argonaut, H.M.S. Gladiator, H.M.S. Exmouth, H.M.S. Liverpool, H.M.S. Prince, H.M.S. Arthur and H.M.S. Invincible, and was awarded the Messina Medal; after the outbreak of war he saw much fighting, taking part in the Heligoland and Falkland Battles, and was killed in action on H.M.S. Invincible at the Jutland Battle 31 May, 1916. He m. at St. Saviour’s, Southsea, 29 Jan. 1906, Emily Henrietta, yst. dau. of Frederick Mumford, of East Cowes, and had three children: John Šamuel, b. 20 July, 1912; Sophia Emily Henrietta, b. 20 Feb. 1908, and Mildred Maud, b. 31 Jan. 1914.
